Blackheath Common starts effectively at the pub's back door — heathland, sand tracks and hardly a road crossing, ideal for letting a dog off the lead. For a longer route, follow the Tillingbourne valley towards Albury Downs and loop back along the river.

On The Street in Albury (GU5 9AG). There's parking directly by the pub, but it's a narrow village street — the common's dirt lay-bys on the Blackheath side are the quieter bet for walkers starting early.

The Friday Street and Leith Hill woodland paths run straight from the car park past the pond. It's the closest thing the Surrey Hills has to a proper forest walk: tall pines, deep shade in summer, and puddles dogs will insist on visiting.

The small National Trust-style car park at Friday Street (RH5 6JR) is the obvious choice, but it's tiny — the inn is genuinely secluded, so don't expect overspill parking. Weekday lunches are the stress-free window.
